I have always been interested in geography. I remember, as a child, dreaming of far off places and exotic people. I grew up in the San Francisco area and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. I went on to Stanford Medical School, chose Ophthalmology as a specialty and have had a busy surgical practice ever since.
But my interest in people and places continued. My wife and I were lucky enough to be able to take an around-the-world trip after my internship, and another one after residency. It was on these trips that I discovered that it was really the people that interested me most. My main photographic interest is in people of the Developing World and their environment. I try to visit places that have retained a certain degree of authenticity - places that are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Most of my photos can be categorized as "Documentary". But I look on it more as art than as journalism. My main objective is to create interesting, informative images that people can enjoy. Whether or not they are technically perfect is a less important issue. Photography, at least for me, is supposed to be fun. If I take it too seriously, it becomes work.
